Food relief services for schools and families

We all need a helping hand sometimes and when it comes to food, support is out there. 

For many families, putting food on the table has become more difficult than ever. Rising living costs, job loss and changes to income support can all add pressure to household budgets and that’s where food relief can make a real difference.  

Food relief services provide essential food and grocery supplies to families doing it tough, offering a helping hand when it’s needed most. 

Support is available  

In Western Australia, there are a number of fantastic organisations offering food relief assistance which families and schools can access. Some food relief programs provide food packages while others offer vouchers so families can choose what works best for them. 

Often, schools play a key role in helping families connect to this support. In some cases, a simple referral from a school community is all that’s needed to get started, helping ensure that support reaches those who need it most, when they need it most.

Who to contact in Western Australia 

Here in Western Australia schools and families can reach out to the following organisations to seek further information and support around food relief assistance. 

Foodbank: 

• Families can call The Emergency Relief and Food Access Service for free on 1800 979 777.

• Foodbank runs the School Breakfast Program and the School Fruit Van. Schools can register for the program here:

• Schools can join the Food for Learning program which aims to provide food for breakfast, lunch or school cooking programs for the most vulnerable of students. 

• Schools can access food hamper boxes on behalf of families within their school community through the Food for Thriving program.
