In this unit students will review information available on food labels to assist choice of nutritious packaged or processed foods. Students will apply this information to address the nutritional needs of a range of different consumers. As part of this unit, students will critically analyse and evaluate ways of presenting nutrition information on food labels such as the nutrition information panel, % Daily Intake Guide (or %DI Thumbnails), traffic light labelling system, low GI symbol and Health Star Rating. For each approach, students will outline the benefits and pitfalls for consumers and manufacturers. They will use this information to develop a nutrition labelling system that is easy to read and understand.
