The unit requires students to understand what it means to be food insecure, and to evaluate the possible reasons for food insecurity. Students investigate and evaluate different Australian community programs which provide food to the communities in need. Students explore one program in detail, including why it exists, whom it targets, and what, if any, specifications, or guidelines exist for the type of food provided. They explore techniques to extend the shelf life of donated food items and organise a food drive within their school. Following this research, students design two recipes and cook one which could be used by their selected program.
